- Term 1 and Term 2: Complete the first 30 weeks of intensive learning.

- Students are required to volunteer for 50 hours in the community during their program.

the year. As part of our course, each student will create their own workshop, which they can use once
they are in the field.

project out in the community which literally sparks change and awareness.
• We offer you 2 different on-the-job training opportunities, which allow you to experience different areas

Recent partnerships have included Harvest House, Youth Quest, and Moncton Employment Training Services. We understand that applying knowledge in a concrete hands-on way allows our students to be best equipped to be successful and to gain meaningful employment.

The employment opportunities can include all at-risk populations and services including addictions, immigration, not-for-profit organizations, at-risk youth, seniors, previously incarcerated individuals, and individuals with exceptionalities… the choices are limitless.

Admission Requirements:
- Grade 12 Diploma, Adult Diploma or GED
- Meeting with an Admissions Advisor
- 19 years of age prior to commencement of Practicum
- Acceptance by the Admissions Committee
- Completion of the Post-Admissions Package (including a clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check)
Level II or University Preparatory courses are required (Based on New Brunswick Anglophone High School Curriculum.)
International students whose first language is not English must submit proof of English language proficiency, unless they have completed a minimum of three years of study at a school where English is the language of instruction. Please see the international application process here.

Course Descriptions:
HSC 101 will introduce Human Services Counselling students to the principles and practices of the human relationship. Students will have the opportunity to integrate theory and skills development as they begin to recognize the process of human interaction. Giving and receiving feedback, needs, assertiveness, self-esteem, and conflict resolution are among the topics covered. Focus will be placed on self-exploration and experiential learning
This Human Services Counsellor course will introduce students to the principles and practices of the human relationship. Students will have the opportunity to integrate theory and skills development as they begin to recognize the process of human interaction. Giving and receiving feedback, needs, assertiveness, self-esteem, and conflict resolution are among the topics covered. Focus will be placed on self-exploration and experiential learning .
This Human Services Counsellor course will introduce students to the human services field. It will provide a basic knowledge of the history of human services, along with an introduction to the vast array of challenges the human services professional may face. The student will get a foundational knowledge of many concepts and intervention strategies that have been used in the field in both the past and present and will outline visions for the future.
This Human Services Counsellor course will explore lifespan psychology (conception to age 2 years). Focus will be placed on the major theorists of development including Erikson, Piaget, Bronfenbrenner, Freud, and Vygotsky. Students will gain an understanding of the major theories of development, and will have an understanding of social, emotional, physical, cognitive, moral, psychological growth through exploring widely accepted theories. This is an introductory course that will progress into term 2.
This Human Services Counsellor course will provide students with the knowledge of the different forms of trauma, the symptoms and comorbid disorders that present with children who have been through traumatic events as well as best practices to support these populations. Students will be given the current trends and practices to treat and build relationships with children and youth who have experienced complex trauma.
This Human Services Counsellor course will introduce the student to a wide variety of applied behavioral techniques used to modify behavior. The course will assist the student in observing behavior in an objective and analytical manner. Classical and operant conditioning theories and procedures will be emphasized in a practical manner.
This Human Services Counsellor course course provides opportunities for the student to utilize the skills and techniques of the group process in social and work situations. Students will implement this knowledge through the design of a community program. The focus of this course is on group behaviour in large group settings and the use of various techniques, methods and approaches within the group process. Students will apply this theoretical knowledge to a wide array of therapeutic activity planning exercises.
This Human Services Counsellor course will introduce students to the importance of inclusion in the helping field. Students will focus on diversity, bias, discrimination, and the importance of using people first language. Students will gain an understanding of residential facilities and their role in the public-school setting.
This Human Services Counsellor course will educate students on the different forms of abuse inflicted against children, adults, elders, and vulnerable persons. Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of many types of abuse, such as: neglect and psychological, physical, sexual, and economic abuse. Students will learn how to identify signs of abuse and what to do if they suspect abuse. Risk factors and prevention will also be covered in respect to victims and perpetrators.
Human Services Counsellor students will study the procedure and DSM-V criteria associated with being diagnosed with mental health illnesses. Students will explore and research prevention and treatments including psychotherapy, group therapy, psychoeducational therapy, and psychopharmacological treatments
This Human Services Counsellor course will provide students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills for managing crisis situations when working in the field. Based on the premise that “Crisis is Opportunity”, students will learn intervention methods (verbal and physical) and safe practices through lectures and certifications. Certifications include CPI’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training.
This Human Services Counsellor course will explore lifespan psychology (2 years – death). Focus will be placed on developing an understanding of social, emotional, physical, cognitive, moral, sexual, and psychological growth through exploring widely accepted theories through the lifespan. Emphasis will also be placed on exceptionalities in development including at-risk and special needs circumstances.
This Human Services Counsellor course will emphasize the necessary skills to begin any helping relationship. Basic helping skills will be examined and practiced-active listening, reflecting, leading, challenging, paraphrasing, summarizing, etc.-through lectures, class discussions and role play demonstrations.
This Human Services Counsellor course will develop skills in various types of report writing common in the human services field. Students will become comfortable expressing information about clients in a professional manner through daily logs, incident reports, and progress reports. Students will complete a thorough assessment and develop a treatment plan for a potential client using people first and objective language which is acceptable in the field.
This Human Services Counsellor course will assist students to develop their research and oral presentation skills in an area of mutual interest between the student and the instructor. It is intended that this research paper and workshop will be added to the student’s professional portfolio. It is to be noted that preparation time for this course will take place on the student’s own time and in class. Time allotted to this course is for completed workshop presentations.
This Human Services Counsellor course will give students a general understanding of how the Canadian legal system works, as well as how to advocate for clients within the system. Students will learn special considerations in human rights, consent, and capacity, mental illness, youth criminal justice, and restorative justice approaches.
This Human Services Counsellor course will prepare students for working with vulnerable populations struggling with addiction. Through theoretical and practical methods, students will understand the phenomenon of addiction. Special emphasis will be placed on assisting students to develop an understanding of such topics as risk factors and protective factors for: compulsive gambling, shopping addiction, cyberaddiction and substance use/dependence. Students will learn models of assisting clients (stages of change model, harm reduction model, abstinence model, motivational interviewing, etc.),and the links between mental health issues and dependence and the core functions of a substance use care plan.
This Human Services Counsellor course will examine the family system, its communication patterns, rules, and life cycle. Students will be introduced to the process of assessment, engagement, empowerment, and discharge as it relates to working with at-risk families. Students will gain skills for working with families, as well as facilitating skill development in families. Students will examine their own family system as well as gain the skills required to work effectively with traditional and non-traditional family structures.
This Human Counsellor Services course will examine the field of human services and demonstrate the basic knowledge of facilitating activities, preparing intervention plans, and building rapport. Students will complete 320 hours of on-the-job training to assist in skill development necessary for the field. This is a pass / fail course, and as such all elements must be submitted in order to complete this course.
