Apply to the Dental Assistant Program
Every great journey starts with a solid foundation. Yours begins with a high school diploma or equivalent, providing the essential base for your dental career. Think of it as your first step towards building a brighter future in healthcare. To begin, you’ll need:
- A High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Grade 11 or 12 English (minimum 65%)
- Grade 11 or 12 Chemistry or Biology (minimum 65%)
Once you’ve met these requirements, you can apply to Oulton’s 10-month Dental Assistant program, which provides hands-on training in a real dental settings. Upon receiving acceptance you can enroll into the Dental Assistant Program.

Prepping for Success
You can streamline your path by tackling those prerequisite university courses while working as a DA. It’s all about maximizing your time and effort. The three required university courses:
- English
- Biology
- One additional elective (not related to English or Biology). Each course must be 3 credits with a minimum grade of 65%.
You can complete these courses online through institutions such as:
- Athabasca University – You can register for three undergraduate individualized-study courses simultaneously at Athabasca University. When registering for multiple courses at the same time, all starting dates will be the same unless you request otherwise. If your preferred start date is not available, you will be advised in writing.
- Acadia University – Online Courses are available as well as continuous-intakes. Remember to request all the relevant information from the University (must be a University Course, 3 credits each and you will need to achieve a minimum of 65% in each course).
- Thompson Rivers University – Self-paced courses are online (usually, in a learning management system) or print-based, with continuous registration and no registration deadline. The maximum completion time is 30 weeks from the registration date. You may complete courses sooner. Remember to request all the relevant information from the University (must be a University Course, 3 credits each and you will need to achieve a minimum of 65% in each course)

Once you have completed your university prerequisites, the next step is applying to Oulton’s 2-year accredited Dental Hygienist program. This process typically includes submitting your application through a Health Science Application process.

Once accepted, you’ll begin a 2-year intensive program, combining classroom education with hands-on clinical practice. Some of your Dental Assistant credits may transfer, lightening your first-term course load. However, completing the full program is essential for your preparation.
In this program, you’ll gain expertise in:
- Periodontal therapy
- Patient education
- Radiology
- Preventative care
Achieving Professional Licensure
Upon graduation, you’ll need to pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) and any required provincial licensing exams. Your Oulton journey prepares you to pass this exam. Depending on your region, you may also need to complete a self-initiated exam to demonstrate your ability to assess and treat patients independently.
